Nonclassical bonding in the novel structure of Ba2Bi3 and unexpected site preference in the coloring variant Ba2BiSb2

The new phase Ba(2)Bi(3) crystallizes in the W(2)CoB(2) structure type. Its structure contains rigorously planar anionic layers of (4.6.4.6)(4.6(2))(2) nets with three- and four-bonded Bi, that are separated by Ba atoms. An unexpected site preference is observed in the coloring variant Ba(2)BiSb(2) with Sb occupying only the three-bonded sites. The nonclassical bonding in the anionic network can be rationalized from a reformulation of the Zintl concept as (Ba(2+))(2)[Bi(3)](3)(-)(e(-)). Bonding distances suggest that the extra electron fills Bi-Bi antibonding states. The densities of states obtained from TB-LMTO-ASA calculations show metallic character for both compounds.     

Proof of the Ergodic Hypothesis for Typical Hard Ball Systems

We consider the system of hard balls with masses and radius r in the flat torus of size . We prove the ergodicity (actually, the Bernoulli mixing property) of such systems for almost every selection of the outer geometric parameters. This theorem complements my earlier result that proved the same, almost sure ergodicity for the case . A trans-tetrahydrobenzoxanthene receptor for the resolution of racemic mixtures of sulfonylamino acids

An enantioselective cleft-type receptor for sulfonylamino acids has been prepared and its use for the resolution of the amino acid racemic mixture is shown.     

Aminopyridine-benzoxanthene enantioselective receptor for sulfonylamino acids

Combination of a cis-tetrahydrobenzoxanthene skeleton with a benzoxazole and an amidopyridine provides an enantioselective receptor for sulfonylamino acids with chiral recognitions of up to 18. The structure of the complex between receptor 1 and the leucine triflate is known by X-ray analysis. The receptor racemic mixture can be suitably resolved through crystalization in the presence of leucine triflate as guest. Receptor 1 can be used for the enantioselective extraction of sulfonylamino acids from aqueous solutions of their salts.     

Metal carbonyl complexes of 3,5-dimethylaceheptylene. Synthesis and molecular structures of (C14H8Me2)Mn2(CO)6 and (C14H8Me2)Fe3(CO)8

The reactions of the non-alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 3,5-dimethylaceheptylene, C₁₄H₈Me₂, with various transition metal carbonyls and the molecular geometry of the compounds (C₁₄H₈Me₂)Mn₂(CO)₆ and (C₁₄H₈Me₂)Fe₃(CO)₈ is shown.     

Analysis of saikosaponins in Bupleuri Radix and Caihu-shugan-san using reversed-phase HPLC with pulsed amperometric detection

A simple and sensitive reversed-phase (RP) HPLC coupled with pulsed amperometric detection (PAD) method was developed to determine the saikosaponin content in Bupleuri Radix or Caihu-shugan-san. Four saikosaponins in Bupleuri Radix and Caihu-shugan-san were extracted with a 6:4 solution of 10 mM sodium phosphate buffer (pH 8)/100% ethanol. Pulsed amperometric detection of carbohydrates in four major saikosaponins was highly sensitive when used with a water-acetonitrile gradient on an alkaline RP column with a post-column delivery system. The limits of detection (S/N=3) and of quantification (S/N=10) of saikosaponins were 0.01-0.02 and 0.03-0.05 μg/mL, respectively. The intra- and inter-day precision (RSDs) were each <9.7% and the average recoveries were 95.0-97.6% in Bupleuri Radix. This method can be used to analyze saikosaponins in Bupleuri Radix and Caihu-shugan-san.     

Synthesis and Anti-HIV-1 Activity of 2-[2-(3,5-Dimethylphenoxy)ethylthio]pyrimidin-4(3H)-ones

New 2-[2-(3,5-dimethylphenoxy)ethyl]thio derivatives of pyrimidin-4(3H)-one containing various substituents at positions 5 and 6 of the pyrimidine ring were synthesized. It was shown that alkylation of 2-thiouracils with 1-bromo-2-(3,5-dimethylphenoxy)ethane in DMF takes place exclusively at the sulfur atom. The obtained 6-benzyl and 6-(2,6-difluorobenzyl) derivatives have clearly defined virus-inhibiting properties with respect to type 1 human immunodeficiency virus in vitro and suppress its reproduction by 50% at concentrations of 1.3 and 11.2 mM respectively.     

Gradient flow titration for the determination of fluoride ion in natural waters

The determination of fluoride ions in water samples was accomplished by using a gradient flow titration. A standard commercial combined electrode is used in a cell configuration that combines the gradient chamber and the electrode in a single unit. The methodology developed gives results with a relative standard deviation of about 3%. The average recoveries after spiking natural samples with fluoride are in the range 100–102%. The method was used successful in determining the fluoride concentration in water samples.
